The need for a "Women in Leadership" initiative was identified in 2002 by a number of Saginaw business women, along with the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce. The goal was to bring women in government and community leadership positions in Saginaw County together to promote community visions and discuss issues that affected Saginaw County
Four women who had just completed the 1000 Leaders Program met to discuss how they could address this recognized need. After much discussion, Jeanne Murphy, Kathleen McGraw, Drewe Robinson and Polly Lynch, working together with Veronica Horn from the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce, launched the Friday Women in Leadership luncheons.
The first meeting of Women in Leadership - Mid Michigan was held in September 2004, and attendees provided ideas for future programs addressing specific issues and needs of women. Luncheon meetings are still held on the 2nd Friday of each month at Horizons Conference Center in Saginaw. The group has grown to over 100 members and the initiative now includes a goal to engage members from Bay and Midland counties.
